We’re living through unprecedented times, marked by historic events and multiple crises. In this symposium, we will take up what it means to live through such moments, building on Ann Swidler’s emblematic distinction between settled and unsettled times. Speakers will present papers that elaborate on the meaning of ‘unsettled’—everything from nationalism to not getting a job (extended abstracts of the papers will be shared with registered participants prior to the event). We are aiming for a lively conversation on 'unsettled times'—what they mean, how they get built up or diffused, or indeed the possibilities for resilience when everything is unsettled. The symposium will conclude with Ann Swidler sharing her reflections and hosting the Q&A session with Michèle Lamont.
