Ioana Sendroiu, a former Raphael Morrison Dorman Memorial Postdoctoral Fellow, is a fall 2022 visiting scholar and assistant professor of sociology at the University of Hong Kong. She obtained her PhD in sociology from the University of Toronto in 2020. Her research is focused on crisis politics. Research interests: Culture and inequality; political sociology; and sociology of law.

Ioana works on crisis politics. She is particularly interested in how we decide — or contest — being "in crisis," and the reactions resulting from such decisions. Ioana's taken this on both in terms of state politics — focusing on human rights and post-war transitions — and everyday experiences of stigma, discrimination, and hopelessness. Ioana is currently pursuing two projects: 1) contesting crisis definitions with a focus on climate change, and 2) the meaning of emergency in authoritarian regimes.
