Michael Zanger-Tishler is a sociologist whose research focuses on the criminal legal system, the sociology of knowledge, state institutions, race and ethnicity, and critical data studies. He uses both statistical and qualitative methods to study inequalities in the criminal legal system and theorize how the types of data available to study crime and the criminal legal system shape the quantitative claims we can make about it. His work has a comparative focus on the United States, France, and Israel/Palestine. He received his PhD in Sociology and Social Policy from Harvard University in 2026 and will join the Department of Sociology and Criminology at the University of Iowa as an Assistant Professor following his fellowship year.

Research interests: Comparative study of punishment, criminal justice, and race; modern France; and modern Israel/Palestine.
